The Digital Content Creators Association of Kenya (DCCAK) has criticized the former Deputy President regarding statements urging a boycott of certain artists from the Mt Kenya area for their interaction with his successor, Kithure Kindiki.
The DCCAK denounced Gachgua’s comments, labeling them as regressive and a clear violation of Kenya’s constitutional liberties.
Via Chairman Bob Ndolo, the organization charged the ex-DP with trying to suppress creative expressions and use cultural elements as a tool for political advantage.
“It is deeply regrettable that during a period when Kenya is striving to remove obstacles that have historically prevented our artists from receiving fair compensation, a former Deputy President would intimidate private entertainment establishments into denying these creators their livelihood,” Ndolo stated.
He stressed that artistic expression is protected under Articles 33 and 40 of the Kenyan Constitution, and he noted that these rights are non-negotiable and unconditional.
The DCCAK encouraged artists to keep producing fearlessly, addressing powerful entities with honesty, supporting their communities, and informing the public about crucial topics such as the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF), housing, and the Hustler Fund.
Ndolo emphasized that Kenyan artists won’t succumb to Gachagna’s desires since they believe their abilities come from God, not from Gachauga.
To Rigathi Gachagna, let us make clear this point: Kenyan artists do not see themselves as your subjects. They will neither bend to your dictates nor ask for your approval to express themselves. Their talents come from God, not from you.
This statement comes as a reaction to Gachagna’s request for musicians from the Mt Kenya area, who met with his successor, Kithure Kindiki, at his Karen home, to apologize to the community.
Addressing attendees at AIPCA Kihoya in Murang’a County, Gachagna asserted that these musicians are betrayers of their community.
“Our artists and musicians have turned into betrayers of our community. They were instructed to deceive you by claiming that SHA is operational, roads are under construction, and the educational sector is thriving,” stated Gachagna.
Gachauga mentioned that following talks with the elders from Mount Kenya region, they require the artists to apologize to the community.
The previous artist stated that if they do not succeed, the community should cease paying attention to their music and venues ought to halt inviting them to perform.
He additionally instructed individuals to unfollow those who do not apologize on social media platforms.
“I met with the elders yesterday, and they asked me to declare that these artists should apologize. If they do not, we will cease supporting their music,” he stated.
