It turned out not to be the Doctor but rather John Smith (as we’re nearing the end of the season, creativity seems to wane). He was blissfully wedded to Belinda (played by Varada Sethu) and they even had a child together.
Into this picture of domestic bliss burst the villain-filled reality Whovians are accustomed to – and they had a monologue up their sleeves.

Reya’s (Punjjabi) monologue may have had a self-referential touch – including a humorous ‘exposition’ quip – yet it still succumbed to the well-trodden trope of villains explaining their intentions and actions directly, rather than revealing this information more subtly through the narrative.
It was at this point that the Rani finally disclosed what they’re actually doing. More or less. However, dedicated Who fans believe they’ve put in additional effort to decipher the remaining details.
The nefarious Rani intends to delve into the depths of this realm to locate Omega, a supremely powerful being from ancient Time Lord lore.
When attempting to revive the Doctor’s memories following his mundane suburban disorientation, Reya clarified, “I am the final Time Lord, and you are the last Time Lady originating from the planet Gallifrey.”
She cryptically added: ‘The sorrow lies in the fact that we were never foes. Each antagonist you’ve battled craved demise. I merely desired existence. Keep that in mind?’
Many enthusiasts have been pondering whether the Rani could potentially bring back Gallifrey and the Time Lords, rather than following the typical destructive approach usually employed by antagonists.
Dedicated fans of Doctor Who quickly jumped onto Reddit to speculate about what it could signify. User @Grafikpapst commented: “Her intention is to revive the Time Lords. He is the scientist responsible for inventing the Time Lords. Additionally, being the most brilliant intellect that Gallifrey has ever known, The Rani is likely a great admirer, considering she herself is fundamentally a scientist.”
@yeblod agrees, stating, “It seems like she aims to rebuild Gallifrey, particularly considering the emphasis on The Doctor and the Rani being the final members of their respective races.”
A third @Marcuse0 added, “She explicitly tells the Doctor that his other adversaries sought death, whereas she desires life. Reviving Gallifrey would likely align with her objectives.”
Nevertheless, this wasn’t the sole hypothesis presented. User @acetrainerandrew proposed another idea, suggesting that the unveiling might connect with the previous season’s “Wild Blue Yonder.” They wrote: “I believe her aim is to understand how magic operates so she can reverse what the Doctor did in ‘Wild Blue Yonder’ and restore the universe to its original state prior to the existence of magic.”
‘Omega is among the Time Lords who played a role in establishing the current Laws of Time, so perhaps his presence is essential for that purpose?’
We’ll need to watch again next Saturday to find out for certain.
The Doctor Who finale, “The Reality War,” will air on Saturday, May 31st.
