The Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi has been awarded the top honor at the Cannes Film Festival for his film “It Was Just an Accident.”
This victory signifies the filmmaker’s comeback to Cannes for the first time since 2003, following years of arrests and governmental limitations imposed by the Iranian regime.
This marks his debut project since gaining freedom in 2023 after serving time in prison, and he used this opportunity to honor fellow creators who remain incarcerated in his homeland.
