In an emotionally charged segment of “The Squeeze,”
podcast
On Wednesday, May 21, the individual who is 24 years old recounted their terrifying ordeal.

Prior to relocating from California to Utah during his elementary school years, Matthews experienced sexual abuse, an ordeal that persisted following the move of his family.

“She mentioned that her mother’s new partner made everyone feel quite uneasy since they had only recently seen her move away from her father,” she explained.

She went on, “He was certainly quite sensitive, and I’m not sure if he acted this way with everybody. But he was definitely more sensitive towards, you know, me.”

Recalling her early years, Matthews stated, “Looking back now, I realize that I had been subjected to sexual abuse even earlier than I understood at the time. Since I was very young, it wasn’t until around age 11 or 12 that I began to grasp things better and understand that what was happening wasn’t right.”

As her mother and boyfriend became more involved with each other, Matthews and her brothers and sisters frequently went to his place using excuses. They would go there claiming they wanted to drive the all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), but apparently, he insisted that they had to do something else before letting them use the ATVs. She was unaware of these incidents because Matthews kept quiet about it, as she mentioned.

The expectant mother of four expressed feelings of isolation, stating, “It seemed like I didn’t have that secure space where I could share anything with my mom. She simply wasn’t that kind of confidante for me.”

Following her mother’s marriage to her abuser, Matthews reached a crucial point during Halloween in 2015. This event spurred her to muster the bravery to address her mother regarding the maltreatment; however, rather than finding backing, Matthews encountered skepticism.

“As I recall, her response was more or less, ‘You’re not telling the truth. This isn’t correct. It never occurred,’ ” Matthews stated.

She exclaimed, “Rather than fulfilling her duties as a mother and protecting me when I needed it most, all she said was, ‘You’re lying; get out of here.'”

Just at the age of 16, Matthews found herself alone, which led to limited contact with her mother.

“We don’t really see her unless it’s for holidays or like we have a birthday. Again it’s like that’s not a conversation we’ve ever had and I think that’s been like the hardest thing to come to terms with is I don’t think I’m ever going to have that conversation,” Matthews shared.
