The Portfolio Committee on Sports, Arts, and Culture expresses deep sorrow over the demise of renowned theater and film star Mr. Presley Chweneyagae, widely recognized for his performance in the film “Tsotsi.” The committee extends sympathies to the Chweneyagae family, friends, and the wider community during this difficult time.
Mr Joe McGluwa, the Chairperson, stated that Mr Chweneyagae earned a legendary reputation that very few individuals globally would challenge.
“He was simply the best—distinctive and passionate about his work. He raised the bar so high that it may take a long time for another legend to emerge. People around the globe cherished him and admired his talent. As fellow South Africans, we felt privileged to have such exceptional acting talent among us,” stated the Chairperson.
The leading man starred in Africa’s inaugural Oscar-winning film, the pinnacle achievement for any performer. This week, he died at 40 due to natural causes linked to respiratory issues.
Mr. McGluwa mentioned that Cobrizi, formerly known as Chweneyagae, who took his stage name from the character Cobra, could have accomplished even more if he hadn’t passed away prematurely. He appeared in numerous performances, such as portraying Hamlet, Mark Antony, Bottom in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Orestes in the play “Dikeledi,” and countless others.
