As the musical prepares for its premiere, Parton, who is 79 years old, admits that witnessing her life portrayed onstage is both an emotionally charged and thrilling experience.
Set to premiere in Nashville, Tennessee this summer, Dolly: An Official Musical marks Parton’s first foray into full-scale musical theatre.
The event kicks off at the Fisher Center for the Performing Arts on August 8, with previews beginning on July 18, prior to moving to Broadway in 2026.
Although Parton has previously connected with theater via adaptions such as 9 to 5 from screen to stage, this upcoming production will mark her first foray into delving deeply into her own personal narrative.

During a promotional interview for her new frozen meal line with Conagra, Parton shared insights into how she has influenced the musical. She confessed that seeing aspects of her life dramatized onstage evoked a range of emotions within her.
‘It’s quite an odd experience to watch segments of your own life being performed right before your eyes,’ she commented, characterizing the whole situation as deeply moving yet somewhat unreal. As memories from her history were brought back through auditions and practice sessions, she experienced laughter and tears almost equally.
Reflecting on the show made her realize just how much progress she has made throughout the years, and she was struck by the emotions that these memories still evoke.
The show will blend classic favorites with new tracks penned by Parton herself and won’t adhere to a rigid timeline.
Rather than following a linear path, this presentation intertwines pivotal moments from her professional trajectory and personal narrative, providing viewers with an engaging and occasionally surprising expedition through her experiences.
There’s plenty of emotion in it, with lots of popular music—alongside some tracks they’ve never encountered before,” she stated. “The album is grandiose, daring, and genuine.
Although the project had been in development for many years, Parton stated that she chose this moment to share the complete tale, believing that her maturity and life experiences provided the insight needed to portray it accurately.
Renowned for her strong work ethic, Parton mentioned that rehearsals will take place between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., subtly referencing her iconic song “9 to 5.” She also stated that she’ll remain closely engaged until August as the production comes together.
Nevertheless, those anticipating the opportunity to watch her live may feel let down. Parton has decided not to take the stage for this musical, preferring to lend her backing and support to the performers from offstage.
‘I’ll spend my entire summer in Nashville, ensuring everything falls into place,’ she stated. ‘Afterward, we’ll see. Perhaps I’ll simply relax. I believe I deserve a break.’
Parton’s zeal continues to be contagious: ‘It requires immense effort, more than I had anticipated,’ she confessed. ‘Yet, I’m thrilled. Indeed, I am. I’m eager to witness how the world reacts.’
