On Thursday, May 29, the Mauritanian government firmly refuted rumors alleging that Morocco had supposedly “occupied” a portion of their territory. The Minister of Culture, Arts, Communication, and Parliamentary Relations, who acts as the official government spokesman, addressed these claims.

According to reports from Nouakchott, “Mauritania fully exercises its sovereignty over its entire territory,” as stated by El Houssein Ould Meddou. He also emphasized that claims suggesting a potential “transfer of a portion of the territory to a neighboring country” are entirely baseless.
“The situation on the ground shows the contrary. The land belongs to us, and so does the sovereignty,” he emphasized.
This explanation addresses remarks made by former army chief Lebbat Ould Maayouf, who alleged that Morocco has taken control over parts of Mauritanian land. These assertions have resonated with both the Polisario and Algeria.

The Polisario Front likewise responded unfavorably to Mauritania’s announcement of declaring the Lebriga region as a “restricted area for civilians.” On Thursday, the Mauritanian military increased its deployment in the vicinity after conducting operations two days prior where Mauritanian troops were involved.
