Mrs Didi Walson-Jack, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, has urged public sector employees nationwide to adopt fitness exercises as part of their daily routine to boost health and increase efficiency within the Service.
At the May installment of the monthly walking and jogging aerobics event organized by FEPSGA in partnership with the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Walson-Jack, serving as the Honorary Chief Jogger, addressed the attendees at the Mohammed Abiola Stadium in Abuja on Saturday.
The walkathon and running activity drew an enormous crowd with vibrant engagement from employees spanning multiple ministries, departments, and agencies. This gathering transformed into something of a festival as well, drawing permanent secretaries along with high-ranking officers who joined in the activities—jogging, strolling, and moving energetically to loud tunes supplied by a DJ.
During her speech, the Chief emphasized the significance of consistent physical activity, highlighting its role beyond individual health and personal objectives—it’s also a civic duty. She asserted that maintaining good health among government employees leads to enhanced productivity.
Walson-Jack stated: “The assembly today showcases our collective dedication to well-being, teamwork, and bodily strength, which are essential for an efficient and robust team.”
My voyage with this annual activity traces back to when I was serving as a Director, throughout my tenure as a Permanent Secretary, and presently in my role as Head of the Civil Service.
Throughout the years, I’ve grown to understand that physical well-being isn’t merely an individual objective—it’s a crucial public duty. A fit government employee is a more effective one. As leaders, our role goes beyond promoting health; we should demonstrate it through our own actions.
Today, as your Chief Guest Jogger and Leader, I urge every one of us—regardless of position, department, or fitness level—to adopt this workout regimen into our daily lives. Let’s take it upon ourselves as an individual duty and as part of our collective effort towards achieving a dynamic, efficient, and capable civil service.
“As we venture forth together this morning, let’s march and run as one, with strength, unity, and happiness. May the cadence of our actions mirror our shared resolve to create a service that stands firm not just intellectually, but also physically robust and emotionally enduring,” she declared.
The Chief of Services praised the National President of the Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA), Comrade Amaebi Aloku, along with his whole team, for their steadfast commitment to enhancing physical well-being and fostering camaraderie via sports events within the public sector.
Walson-Jack highlighted that the smooth organization of last year’s Annual Public Service Games remains vivid in everyone’s minds, describing it as an impressive showcase of skill, discipline, and amicable rivalry, truly embodying the essence of public service.
She specially offered heartfelt thanks to the Governor of Rivers State and the welcoming, friendly residents of the area for their hospitality during the 2024 edition of the Games.
As she mentioned, their kindness and backing made a lasting impact on everyone involved and significantly aided the event’s triumph. We genuinely appreciate it.
Let’s work together to back programs such as FEPSGA, which go beyond sports to foster nation-building, promote teamwork, and enhance the welfare of public servants who maintain governmental operations daily.
Lastly, let me take this chance to notify you that the Civil Service Week for 2025 will proceed with its customary celebrations in June. Additionally, we are inaugurating an International Civil Service Conference this year.
There will be numerous activities, including Keep-Fit Exercises. A special event focused on walking and jogging is scheduled for the morning of June 28, 2025, followed by an awards night for recognition and rewards. I count on your active participation.

“Let’s tie our shoes, get ready, and stride forward with confidence. As our Civil Service anthem emphasizes, we are moving towards excellence!” she declared.
Patience Oyekunle, Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office, stated that the event goes beyond mere exercise; it serves as a summons to responsibility—a reminder to prioritize well-being, enhance unity among different services, and make a concerted attempt to reignite the shared commitment to outstanding performance.
As the adage states, ‘a healthy body fosters a healthy mind.’ Regular exercise enables us to enhance our productivity, sharpen our mental focus, and rejuvenate our approach to delivering services,” she commented.
