Professor Sola Fosudo, an esteemed Nigerian actor and university professor, has voiced significant worries over the persistent disregard shown by both federal and state authorities towards the performing arts industry, notably the absence of operational theater spaces available for Theater Arts students nationwide.
In a recent discussion, Professor Fosudo from Lagos State University (LASU) lamented how various governments have failed to deliver essential facilities needed for theater students’ practical growth post-graduation.
The government hasn’t considered constructing multiple theaters for Theater Arts graduates to use post-graduation,” he pointed out. “Only one national theater was erected in Iganmu, Lagos. Therefore, individuals residing in areas like Agege, Iyana Ipaja, and various parts of Lagos would be required to travel all the way to Iganmu should there be a performance.
He compared this scenario with the medical and legal fields, wherein the government significantly funds public hospitals and courthouses across the country, thereby generating job opportunities and practical settings for these professionals upon graduation.
Professor Fosudu contended that this strategy ought to also apply to the artistic domain, observing that advanced nations frequently visited by Nigerian leadership deliberately fund cultural infrastructures, thereby fostering growth within the art sector.
