The Ministry of Education has revealed the government’s plan to shift away from the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).
What is CBE?
At a Thanksgiving event held at Baringo High School in Eldama Ravine, Education Principal Secretary Julius Bitok announced that the government has transitioned to Competency-Based Education (CBE).
Bitok described the new system as the ‘world’s best education framework,’ highlighting its emphasis on fostering students’ personal interests and abilities.
Based on the Education PS, this new model represents a considerable departure from the CBC, with the intention of fostering a more competent and independent cohort of students.
“The CBE stands out globally as the premier educational framework since it empowers young individuals to demonstrate their capabilities. With our innovative approach through the KEMIS system, we aim for an impeccable progression rate of 100% from junior school to senior school,” stated Bitok according to Citizen Digital.
The introduction of the new system occurs despite grievances over the government’s inability to release transparent criteria for choosing learning paths, which is a crucial aspect of this initiative.
The ambiguity has caused anxiety in educational institutions as approximately 1.2 million students get ready to move from Grade 9 to Grade 10.
The Education Permanent Secretary stated that the government acknowledges the concerns raised by stakeholders, noting that the ministry has organized a forum to fine-tune and direct the execution of CBE.
Bitok revealed that the government plans to hire 24,000 additional teachers this year to guarantee that the system is adequately supported and smoothly implemented.
“We anticipate that around 1.2 million children will move from junior school to senior school, and we have made sure that every child has a spot in senior school,” Bitok said.
