June 1, 2025

On Saturday, the vibrant town of Okemesi-Ekiti within the Ekiti West Local Government Area of Ekiti State came alive as people gathered to celebrate the renowned Oladunwo festival in this historic community.

The event drew together hundreds of local residents from within the community and abroad, as well as visitors from around the nation and esteemed dignitaries who flocked to the area for this year’s triennial cultural festival. The highlight was the presentation of the renowned Oladunwo masquerade performance under the theme ‘Celebrate Our Abundant Cultural Legacy and Traditions.’

A former Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Chief Akin Osuntokun, who holds the title of Balogun of Okemesi, stated that this traditional assembly acts as an essential forum. It not only highlights the vibrant cultural legacy of the community but also mobilizes backing for its socioeconomic progress.

He encouraged the state administration to increase funding for the cultural and tourism industries, specifically in Okemesi, emphasizing that this investment would bring economic advantages to both the community and the region as a whole.

He drew the governor’s notice to the necessity of closing gaps that were impeding the development of the town’s cultural legacy and tourist attractions.

Osuntokin, who serves as the chairperson for the 2025 event, stated, “The Okemesi Cultural Heritage festival reflects our dedication to safeguarding and advancing our profound cultural heritage, emphasizing unity, security, and collective accountability.”

The festival provides an opportunity to support initiatives that elevate the community, bringing together all members—sons, daughters, and friends—in a shared festivity that honors their identities.

The ex-Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council during the 2023 general elections praised Governor Biodun Oyebanji for his dedication to improving the state’s infrastructure. They urged citizens to back the governor for another term lasting four years.

Governor Oyebanji, who was present through the Commissioner for Arts, Culture, and Creative Economy, Professor Rasaki Ojo-Bakare, mentioned that the state administration is diligently striving to transform the festival into an acknowledged tourist draw for the region.

He stated that Ekiti remains a place that fosters innovation, knowledge exchange, and economic progress.

The commissioner showed his joy over the large attendance, emphasizing that the festival could significantly enhance the local economy once properly leveraged.

The Owa Ooye of Okemesi-Ekiti, King Gbadebo Adedeji stated that the collective efforts from local leaders, enterprises, and citizens demonstrated their commitment to keeping Okemesi a secure, welcoming, and thriving historical town. In this place, age-old customs are respected, and advancements are embraced with joy.

“As we embrace the spirit of this year’s festivities, let us take pride in our Okemesi-Ekiti identity, and instil in future generations, the values of integrity, respect, and community development.

” The Okemesi Cultural Heritage celebration is a call to action for us all to champion our culture, and stand united against forces that threaten our peace and values,” he said.

Speaking on the importance of the festival, the traditional ruler said it was a cultural gathering that attracted people outside the state to witness the various displays of Masquerades, especially, the most prominent one called Ladunwo.

Oba Adedeji commended Governor Oyebanji for his efforts in improving infrastructure in the state, and Okemesi in particular.

“This Egungun festival warrants investment from the government. If you suggest going up a mountain or visiting a museum, we have those attractions right here in Okemesi,” stated Oba Adedeji.
