Emmanuel College in Harare celebrated the Term 2 Interschools golf tournament following their team’s victory in the A Division event held at ZRP Golf Club recently.
The top honors at the successful junior golf tournament went to students from St John’s College as they claimed victory in the primary Championship division. Meanwhile, representatives from St George’s College and Lomagundi emerged victorious in their respective categories.
Fifteen schools participated in the event, which was attended by Sports, Arts, Recreation, and Culture Minister Anselem Sanyatwe.
The participating institutions in the competition also included Arundel School, CBC, Cornway College, Dominican Convent, Goldridge College, Hellenic Academy, Hillcrest College, Peterhouse Boys, Peterhouse Girls, Riverdale School, and The Heritage School.
Charles Kamba, the patron of Emmanuel College, stated that the competition was crucial as it provided their golfers with a chance to participate and enhance their skills.
“The recently concluded junior golf tournament held at the ZRP Golf Club holds significant importance for our institution, Emmanuel College, since it serves as a benchmark for assessing the progress and proficiency of our young golfers when compared against some of the best junior players from all over Zimbabwe,” he stated.
Keep in mind that this is a national competition, so you’ll be facing young golfers with Scratch-level play and extremely low handicaps, providing them greater visibility. We’re utilizing this event as a preparatory ground for our players heading into international competitions, making it quite significant.
Moving ahead, we anticipate significant progress from our golfers regarding their mindset and perspective towards the game. The tournament featured a coaching clinic where we clarified the rules for them, aiding their development. We have the Junior All Africa Tournament in Durban coming up in August, making this competition crucial as part of our preparatory efforts,” he stated.
The Heritage School came in second place in the Championship Division, with St John’s being the champions. Hellenic Academy secured the third position.
In the A Division, Peter House Boys ranked second behind Emmanuel College, followed by St George’s in third place.
St George’s took home the win for the B Division, while Lomagundi College claimed victory in the C Division.
In the individual competition, one of the nation’s leading young golfers, Munesu Chimhini from St George’s College, emerged as the overall champion. Luke Rooney from St John’s secured the second position, with female golfer Miriam Masiya finishing third.
