Colin Farrell
has discussed why he could only undergo the procedure of becoming unrecognizable using a heap of prosthetics and makeup transformations.
The Penguin
on alternate days during the shoot.
Farrell looked entirely different and unrecognizable as the
DC villain
in the hit
HBO
series, after
hours spent seated in the makeup chair each morning
to become the gangster Oz Cobb.
The individual mentioned that the transformation into the Penguin took approximately three hours, during which they would recite their lines and listen to music to occupy themselves.
Farrell discussed the metamorphosis during a recent seated conversation with
Danny DeVito
— who also portrayed the Penguin in Tim Burton’s 1992 movie “Batman Returns” — for
Variety
.
Farrell said the production wouldn’t allow him to work consecutive days as his skin began reacting badly after just one day of wearing the makeup and prosthetics crafted by makeup artist Mike Marino.
He said to DeVito, “Each morning, I would arrive in my pajamas since I simply didn’t want to bother with putting on a pair of pants.”
‘The music was already on; the coffee was prepared. I would refresh my energy with some lines and start tackling the day’s tasks. It was perfect for catching up.’
‘They couldn’t schedule me for two consecutive days due to the makeup issues; my skin kept breaking out. Typically, I had shifts lasting 16, 17, or even up to 18 hours per day during most weeks.’
DeVito mentioned that this was easier than his transformation into the Penguin, as he had to spend time on set daily for 66 days.
ChinPao
spoke to Colin when the eight-episode series was released
about reprising the role, after he made his debut in the 2022 film The Batman starring Robert Pattinson.
Farrell mentioned that he resided in a hotel room far from his family while shooting, leading him to develop an intense preoccupation with the production.
‘So you immerse yourself in that, dedicating much of your awake time to reviewing it, contemplating it, exploring the backstory, and considering various scenarios and situations the character could encounter that may not be included in the script.’
‘Suddenly, it starts to possess its own vital force. It comes from you, yet exists beyond you, understand?’ he explained.
The Penguin is set to come back for season 2.
