Downton Abbey Fans Mourn: Beloved Franchise Concludes After 15 Years

June 3, 2025

Downton Abbey
Viewers are already deeply moved as they watch the first trailer for the franchise’s final farewell after a three-year anticipation.

The long-running
ITV
The period drama crafted by Julian Fellowes first won over audiences in 2010 through the trials and tribulations of the Crawley family as they encountered warfare, romance, sorrow, and shifts within the social hierarchy during the early 1900s in England.

Following its completion of an initial six-season arc in 2015, this beloved series made a comeback as a film trilogy featuring key actors like Michelle Dockery as Mary, Laura Carmichael as Edith, Hugh Bonneville as Lord Grantham, Joanne Froggatt as Anna Bates, and Jim Carter as Mr Carson, who all took up their former characters once again.

All good things must come to an end, however.

Following the massive success of the second feature film, A New Era, in 2022 (which marked the passing of the late
Maggie Smith
Her character, the Dowager), the third and final film is scheduled for release in September.

The first teaser trailer for The Grand Finale, which came out earlier today, is running with the tagline: ‘The place we’ll always remember. The family we’ll never forget. Everything has led to this.’

If that didn’t touch your heart, then witnessing the group reunited as they embark on a new era – the 1930s – and appear to bid farewell to their home might just bring long-time viewers close to tears.

Notably, the trailer ends with Robert emotionally placing his hand on the building to bid it goodbye.

‘The conclusion where Robert kisses his hand and places it on the house, with the entire family and servants gathered outside, always touches my heart,’ commented haydendixon7189 on YouTube.

‘The trailer didn’t disclose much information yet simultaneously unveiled all the details. I’m incredibly emotional and am eagerly anticipating September,’ jdivine7445 commented.

‘Never have I become tearful from watching a trailer before. It hits me sharply that I’ll miss the Dowager immensely, and this realization makes me equally nostalgic for Maggie Smith,’ as shared by RidingAGrizzly.

“I can’t stop myself from crying,” mohitkotak2473 commented.

‘I shed tears like never before after watching this trailer… It gave me so many thrills! This is the most emotional goodbye I have to say to a television series. Thank you for all these wonderful years,’ monsieurtoc commented.

Ove Ron X user mx_aman commented, ‘I can’t deal with this.’

“If you notice me crying over some wealthy British nobles being forced to sell their huge estate, please respect my privacy during this challenging period,” Fawvarl emotionally remarked.

‘Downton Abbey has been a significant part of my life for the past 15 years. I can hardly believe it’s finally drawing to an end,’ AnnaLibri mourned.

Not many details have emerged regarding the storyline of the third film, though it’s known that Henry Talbot, played by Matthew Goode, will have no part in this installment following his minor role in the previous movie.

‘ Wouldn’t it be more thrilling if Lady Mary didn’t rely on a man, which could leave her alone at the end? She’s admired by some as a contemporary role model.’

Meanwhile, in January,
Michelle gently reflected
Regarding expectations for the upcoming film and its tribute to Smith, as reported by Collider.

‘It’s a gorgeous movie. For us, it was truly delightful to reunite once more. The film is indeed a great homage to Maggie Smith.’

Paul Giamatti will return as Lady Cora’s Uncle Harold Levinson in the concluding film, having first played this role back in 2013.

‘Collaborating with Paul once more was delightful. He brings such joy to everyone around him. Since he was already an integral member of our team, it was great having him return to the set. I’m truly looking forward to seeing the finished movie,’ Michelle commented at the time.

Seasons one through six of Downton Abbey can be streamed on Netflix. The movie “Downton Abbey: A New Era” will premiere in theaters.
