Nigerian Afrobeats artist Burna Boy has addressed the criticism he received after suggesting he would host a complimentary concert in Burkina Faso.
Sharing on his Instagram Story, the Grammy Award-winning musician responded to those who criticized the project and alleged that he had been turned down by the President of Burkina Faso.
“I mentioned my desire to perform a complimentary concert in Burkina Faso. Although there were many encouraging responses, I was taken aback by the unexpectedly harsh and insulting remarks from certain people,” Burna Boy stated.
He proceeded to justify his actions and critique those who were doubting his reasons.
I apologize, but some of you lack the standing to utter my name. Should your sole interaction with the world be mindlessly commenting online or talking towards your selfie light, you hold no right to dictate what actions I should take regarding any aspect of Africa. This is particularly true considering nobody in your family tree has ever significantly contributed to either the continent or the wider world.
Burna Boy stressed that he acts based on principles rather than for personal benefit.
“I have nothing to gain from anyone. I don’t owe anybody anything, yet that has never prevented me from carrying out the excellent work I do. My integrity remains beyond question. So go to hell if you’ve got something negative to say,” Burna Boy stated firmly.
