B&Q Apologizes for Sexist Bathroom Cabinet Ad in International Edition

June 7, 2025

DIY giant
B&Q
had to apologize after advertising a bathroom cabinet as being simple to assemble “even if you are female.”

The 140cm x 33cm flat-back bamboo module showcased on the firm’s webpage was adorned with toiletries and visually appealing plants.

But some buyers were more interested in its description which read: ‘Tall storage cabinet is perfect for saving space, slim design to fit in almost any corner.

The three shelves offer ample space for keeping necessities well-organized and tidy, while the cabinet door adds an extra layer of privacy.

‘It’s simple to put together the cabinet, even for girls.’

Before being removed by the British home improvement firm as reported by The Sun, the product did not have any reviews or ratings.

A spokesman for B&Q added the description had been ‘offered by a third-party seller’.

She said: ‘We apologise for any offence caused by this inappropriate description of a product offered by a third-party seller.’

The apology follows B&Q’s announcement of their Do The Lift Thing campaign in March, aimed at ‘highlighting tradeswomen overcoming obstacles’.

The company initiated this program hoping it would ‘underscore the emerging trend of women in trade professions, while also shedding light on the obstacles hindering more girls and women from entering these fields.’

At the time of the launch, Supply and Logistics Director Amelie Gallichan-Todd stated: “Given that just two percent of trade professionals are women, B&Q is dedicated to addressing this issue and has promised £1 million to support trade apprenticeships across multiple fields such as carpentry, plumbing, painting, and decoration.”

Through highlighting accomplished women in these positions, our aim is to motivate the upcoming generation to seek careers in trade fields, thereby questioning established norms and reshaping attitudes.

In the foreword to their ‘gender pay gap report’ from last year, B&Q stated: “We take pride in the advancements we are achieving.”

‘Our management positions are held by women in 44 percent of cases.’
