June 7, 2025

  • The Nakuru family stated that their daughter went missing after leaving her M-Pesa store in Nakuru with KSh 250,000 intended for depositing into her boss’s bank account.

  • Based on what her parents say, Hanna Waithera last contacted them on Wednesday, May 21.

  • The family has now informed the Nakuru police station about the incident and is hoping for her safe return.

Nakuru: A household in Mawanga Estate, located in the Bahati sub-county, is concerned about their missing relative who vanished seven days ago in Nakuru’s central business district while en route to make an M-Pesa payment.

When did the Nakuru M-Pesa staff member go missing?

It is reported that Hanna Waithera, who works as an M-Pesa shop attendant, departed from her workplace approximately at 1:00 pm on Wednesday, May 21. Her task was to deposit KSh 250,000 into a neighboring bank situated near Kenyatta Avenue; however, she did not come back afterward.

Mary Njeri Mwangi, the mother of Waithera, mentioned that on the critical day, she attempted to contact her daughter but received no response, which made her increasingly worried.

“I am concerned because we haven’t found her anywhere, and she hasn’t even answered the calls,” Njeri stated.

The upset parent stated that their primary concern at present is to have her returned safely and to investigate the accusations regarding the alleged disappearance of funds, which her boss claims she took responsibility for.

“I wish to have my daughter returned. Despite her employer pressing strongly for payment, I pray that she is located first; afterwards, we can address the financial matters as life is invaluable,” she remarked.

The missing woman’s mother stated that they were recently detained by DCI officers who reportedly subjected them to harassment prior to recording their statements at their premises in order to gather information regarding the incident.

The husband of the missing woman, Zachariah Wambugu Wanjohi, who runs a car rental service, discovered that their daughter was also gone after receiving inquiries from his mother-in-law, who was worried because she couldn’t get through to her.

“I sought the contact information of the M-Pesa owner from my mother-in-law, and upon calling him, he informed me that he was at Nakuru Central Police Station. Upon reaching there, I was notified that I couldn’t file a report about a missing individual as less than 24 hours had passed,” Wanjohi remembered.

A day afterward, the family filed a missing persons report at the precinct.

For how many years has Hanna Waithera been serving as an M-PESA attendant?

Furthermore, the family mentioned that their daughter put in hard work at her job, which she had been doing for more than a year.

“There was a period when I came here and went with her to deposit KSh 800,000. She managed it without any problems at that time, so I am unsure why she is currently being accused of taking off with the funds,” the father stated.

Steve Mbuthia, who operated the M-Pesa shop where the missing woman was previously employed, chose not to comment on the matter when reporters confronted him near the DCI offices in Nakuru.

Following the accusations of harassing the family, police officers stayed silent when asked for comments on the matter.

The Nakuru County police chief, Michael Mwaura, avoided reporters stationed outside the Nakuru county commissioner’s office following an extended wait of more than two hours where he was expected to comment on the issue, even though he had previously shown readiness to speak about it.
