Audiences were moved to tears as they finished watching every installment of a critically acclaimed family drama series, which was eventually made available on iPlayer. Some viewers chose to binge-watch ‘all episodes in a single day.’

“The Last Anniversary,” released on the demand service last Saturday, centers around journalist Sophie (played by Teresa Palmer), who finds herself inheriting her former partner’s great-aunt’s home located on the isolated, imaginary Scribbly Gum Island.

As she becomes more settled, she also tries to resolve a 50-year-old local cold case that has been haunting the island—and attracted significant attention.

The six-episode Australian comedy-drama series was initially unveiled in Australia in March and draws inspiration from the 2005 book of the same title by Liane Moriarty, who also penned “Big Little Lies” and “Nine Perfect Strangers.”

In addition to starring Teresa (The Fall Guy), the film also features renowned British actress Miranda Richardson (Good Omens), who has been nominated for an Academy Award, as well as Australian actress Danielle Macdonald (The Tourist).

And Liane herself, along with many others, has garnered praise from both critics and audiences who have expressed their admiration online through positive reviews and comments, lauding the high quality of the show.

Common Sense Media
Meanwhile, they stated: “The enigma serves mainly as a background for a thoughtful, gentle drama that explores the intricacies of family life, motherhood, and interpersonal connections.”

The BBC summary states: “Upon inheriting a house on Scribbly Gum Island under mysterious circumstances, Sophie Honeywell’s presence stirs up hidden truths kept secret by three generations of women.”

The drama is promoted as a ‘captivating mystery centered around family, motherhood, and the women who shape the generations that follow’.

Sue Deeks, who leads BBC’s program procurement efforts, described the series as “a captivating drama brimming with lively characters, humor, and romance, centered around an intriguing mystery.”

She went on: “I have no doubt that BBC audiences will greatly appreciate their trip to the picturesque Scribbly Gum Island.”

Although the inheritance catches her off guard, and the locals greet her with a rather cold welcome when she arrives, Sophie soon understands that this might just offer the new beginning she has longed for.

Unmarried and approaching 40, she finds herself intrigued by her senior patron’s suggestion that the island might finally bring her love.

We learn the mystery somehow concerns two sisters – one of them being the elderly woman Sophie inherits the house from – along with a couple who went missing and a baby who was abandoned.

However, precisely how everything ties together still needs to be revealed.

This represents another win for the BBC, following their announcement the previous week that they were
delighting fans as they welcome back a beloved sitcom for an entirely new season
.

The acclaimed sitcom “Not Going Out,” conceived by comedian Lee Mack, is scheduled to return with a six-episode season 14 approximately two years following the broadcast of its most recent installments.

Initially launched in 2006, this comedy revolves around Lee, portrayed by a humorous actor, an idle individual with little ambition. The story also features Lucy (played by Sally Bretton), who is both his best friend’s sibling and the landlord of their shared apartment in London.

An on-again-off-again romantic tension developed gradually across multiple seasons between the pair, culminating in their unexpected marriage during the seventh-season finale, shortly before they welcomed a child into the world.

The eighth season advanced eight years ahead, with all later installments chronicling their tumultuous family life alongside their three kids.

And now series 14 will move the story on several years more, when the couple are empty nesters and moved out of their suburban family home – but still up to plenty of antics.

The Last Anniversary is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
