Why has Fr Bett’s family pardoned those who killed him?
During the requiem Mass for the murdered priest at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Eldoret on Monday, June 2, family spokesperson Amos Samoei stated that the choice to forgive those responsible was motivated by the desire for Fr Bett to depart this life peacefully.
Samoei additionally remarked that forgiveness was the sole consoling act they could extend.
“The family, including parents and relatives of the late Father Allois Cheruiyot Bett, has pardoned those who took his life,” stated the family representative.
Samoei stated that those responsible for the murder should either step forward themselves or have their kin reach out to the family to fully demonstrate their forgiveness.
He stated that offenders going to visit the family is part of an established Kalenjin tradition.
“As part of the Kalenjin community’s protocols, when someone takes another’s life, it is necessary for the family members to seek out elders who will then meet with the parents of the victim. These elders engage in discussions and provide forgiveness,” clarified Samoei.
Father Bett was murdered shortly after conducting a holy Mass in the Tot area of the unstable Kerio Valley region, where he served.
Who was responsible for killing Father Allois Bett?
The authorities have rejected assertions that he was murdered by robbers, and they continue their search for those involved. Earlier, the police reported capturing six individuals connected to the event.
However, as the police proceed with their investigations, aiming to result in the apprehension of those responsible, Fr Allois Bett’s family urged the community to assist by offering any relevant information they might have.
“The surveillance cameras in Allois were shut down; however, the footage from the crime scene involving the deceased Kasipul Kabondo Member of Parliament Ongondo was retrieved by law enforcement within two days. As for the CCTVs at Allois Bett’s location, they showed members of the community who had gathered together on that tragic day,” stated Samoei.
Father Bett is scheduled to be interred on Tuesday, June 3, at the Holy Family Parish Ol Lessos cemetery in Nandi County.
