The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has conveyed profound grief following the demise of 20 athletes and officials from Kano State, who perished in a devastating road incident while traveling back from the 22nd National Sports Festival hosted in Abeokuta, Ogun State.
As stated by the Public Relations Officer, Comrade Samson Ajasa Adeyemi, representing NANS President Comrade Olusola Oladoja, the organization characterized this event as a significant national tragedy, particularly affecting young people and athletes.
“This tragic event has overshadowed the whole country with sorrow, especially affecting the younger generation and sports enthusiasts, as we grieve the premature loss of these gifted people who devoted their lives to representing their state and fostering unity through athletics,” the statement said.
NANS conveyed sincere sympathies to the Governor of Kano State, the Kano State Sports Council, the grieving families, and all residents of Kano.
“The departure of these luminous individuals is not just a blow to their respective families but to our country as a whole,” Oladoja remarked.
As they pledged their backing for the families affected, NANS urged the pertinent officials to guarantee sufficient aid and solace are offered to those who have been struck by the disaster.
The organization additionally called upon both state and federal authorities to make the protection and well-being of athletes and residents a top priority, especially when traveling across states for nationwide competitions.
“A comprehensive inquiry into the events leading up to this incident needs to be conducted to avoid similar occurrences in the future,” the statement concluded.
