State of the Nation: Anglican Leader Champions Family Values Revival

June 9, 2025

As Nigeria faces a deterioration in family values leading to a broader social crisis, the Archbishop Metropolitan and Primate of All Nigeria, Most Reverend Henry Ndukuba, has urged for the restoration of these values to tackle the escalating moral decay within the community.

During a Thanksgiving service marking the twelfth Synod of the Diocese of Abuja at St Philip’s Church in Gwarimpa, the Anglican Primate addressed the press. The synod, themed ‘Serve the Lord, Imperative for the Family Under God,’ has proven to be a significant milestone, bringing about substantial change for both individuals and families within the diocese.

He stated that this period has been about urging believers to return to God collectively, not just as separate entities but also as part of familial units. This underscores God’s original vision for the establishment of the family—the initial organization upon which both religious institutions and societal structures are founded.

And thus, just as it was during the time of Joshua, we now offer another chance to strengthen our belief and dedication to God—as our Maker, Redeemer, Sanctifier, and Provider. Therefore, at the close of this ceremony, we aim to reassert our faith and revitalize our baptismal vows both individually and collectively as members of God’s family,” he stated. “We place our confidence in the assurance that wherever we journey, God’s presence shall accompany us.

Primate Ndukuba emphasized that during this period when the family unit is encountering significant difficulties across various dimensions—economic, spiritual, and moral—and core values cherished by families are deteriorating, with traditional bonds that once shaped individuals now weakened, it is crucial to revert to foundational principles. He stated, “We must rebuild starting where God found us—in our homes and within our families. We ask for His grace concerning the issues plaguing these familial relationships. Our prayer is that every family receives healing through God’s intervention. Each individual should come back into alignment as per divine guidance: just as God promises to turn the hearts of children toward their parents and vice versa,” he remarked.

The clergy implored God to reconstruct homes and families and align individuals with His intended purpose. “Thus, we wish to motivate Nigerians, despite the difficulties, to place our faith and hopes in God.”

“Let us return and seek for God’s purpose in our lives and in our families, and rebuild what the enemy seeks to destroy. Our people said that it is only where there is no fingernail that you will say that the cola will not go round, but so long as there is fingernail, you can break the cola, so we are encouraging love, unity, oneness, sharing encouragement in the family, anyone who has let him share with the with the family, with those around him”, he added.
