Ex-Senator Calls for Government Action: Honoring Kano Athletes Lost in Tragic Road Accident – International Edition (English)

He characterized the incident as a tragedy for Kano and the whole nation.

“They journeyed thousands of kilometers just to meet their end near ‘Mun kusa shigowa.’ Before departing this world, they sent their final goodbyes through phone calls and messages. These individuals sacrificed themselves while serving actively for their nation and government. We mourn the loss of an energetic generation that stood for us with the resolve to bring pride upon us,” he said additionally.


How the tragedy happened

The incident occurred on Saturday in Dakatsalle town, which is approximately 50 kilometers away from Kano city. The tragedy struck as the state’s sports team was traveling back from the National Sports Festival held in Ogun State.

The Chairman of the Kano State Sports Commission, Umar Fagge, stated that the vehicle was carrying 30 individuals.

Among the victims were athletes, trainers, medical personnel, and reporters.

Included among the deceased were the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Sports Commission and a photographer working for Express Radio.

The emergency services were promptly dispatched to the location. According to the Federal Road Safety Corp. (FRSC), an inquiry is currently underway to determine the cause of the accident.


Government’s response

The Kano State Governor, Abba Yusuf, announced that Monday would be observed as a public holiday to commemorate those who lost their lives.

The Deputy Governor toured the hospital housing the remains and declared that every victim’s family would be provided with €1 million and food supplies by the state government.

The Commissioner responsible for Youth and Sports Development, Mustapha Kwankwaso, likewise conveyed his profound sorrow regarding the incident.

“This is a deeply painful moment for all of us. We are devastated by the news of the ghastly accident that occurred as our athletes were returning home after representing our great state with pride and commitment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims, their families, and the entire sporting community in Kano,” he said.

He assured that the administration would make every effort to assist the wounded and the relatives of those who perished.

Prior to the incident, Kano State had excelled at the National Sports Festival. They secured 6 gold, 13 silver, and 10 bronze medals, placing them 13th nationally.
