Owen Wilson Reacts to Series Being Compared to One of TV’s Greatest Shows Ever

Meeting the expectations set by one of the most monumental television series ever aired is quite a challenge.

However, that is the challenge that awaits us.

immediately after a trailer was dropped.

Owen Wilson
The recently launched series features ex-professional golfer Pryce Cahill (portrayed by the actor from “Wedding Crashers”), who recognizes exceptional talent in young prodigy Santi Wheeler (acted by Peter Dager). He chooses to mentor him accordingly.

It’s like combining elements from “Happy Gilmore” with a touch of Jason Sudeikis’ character from “Ted Lasso,” resulting in

sat down for an exclusive chat with Owen and his co-star

, we needed to discover their thoughts on the comparisons.

I personally dedicated numerous hours of my childhood to watching
Adam Sandler causes mayhem on the golf course.
, and only years afterward did I find myself
shedding tears for a make-believe football squad
, The stick seemed to embody all I desired in a comfortable watch by apparently merging the best aspects of both.

‘I enjoy the series,’ stated Owen, who is 56 years old, when questioned about comparisons between Stick and Ted Lasso, reportedly attracting 16.9 billion viewing minutes in 2023.

‘So naturally, you’d want the performance to resonate with audiences in such a manner.’

The actor from Loki went on: “One thing I appreciated about that series was its genuine warmth and humor, which set it apart. In our production called Stick, we also have comedic elements along with heartfelt moments and emotional depth. It possesses a certain gentleness that feels quite refreshing nowadays.”

Owen is accompanied in Stick by Judy, an actress known for roles in “What Women Want” and “13 Going On 30,” who portrays Pryce’s former wife Amber-Linn. Despite their divorce, she continues to play a significant role in his life.

Judy, who is 49 years old, concurred with the notion that viewing “Stick” evokes a feeling of nostalgia for audiences because it brings back memories of similar ‘underdog tales,’ such as the 2005 sports comedy film “Bad News Bears.”

‘I’m delighted whenever I get compared to widely popular TV shows and movies. I fully support it, though I believe there’s an enduring quality to Stick’s storyline,’ she mentioned.

‘That’s likely why these comparisons seem so straightforward. It resonates because of the theme involving an underdog, acknowledging youthful potential, seeking redemption, exploring connections, and opting for a family rather than being born into one. Additionally, everybody enjoys a solid road-trip comedy, which adds another layer to this mix.’

Just as you would anticipate from an underdog sports tale, Stick offers an entertaining and lighthearted viewing experience, yet it also brims with emotions that will surely touch your heart.

The most challenging part for Owen during the production of Stick was the scenes where he had to act alongside Judy, particularly those moments when her character Amber-Linn chooses to back her ex-husband Pryce by funding his latest business endeavor.

‘In my life, I’ve benefited so much from people believing in me and giving me a chance. So the scenes with Judy, believing in me enough to put money into this crazy idea I have, that’s a moving thing,’ he said.

On the contrary, Judy felt moved by a moment she wasn’t directly involved in when Pryce listens to Santi hitting a golf ball for the first time in the premiere episode and is impressed.

Prior to talking with Owen and Judy, I was surprised to discover that I had never witnessed their collaboration in any projects… the only instance being their joint appearance in the 2010 movie Marmaduke.

However, since Owen voiced the titular animated dog, they never had the opportunity to appear together onscreen.

“It’s similar to when people inquire about Paul Newman’s role in ‘Cars.’ The truth is, he was never involved,” Owen explained, drawing parallels between ‘Marmaduke’ and the 2006 Pixar film where he lent his voice to the character Lightning McQueen alongside Paul Newman, who voiced Doc Hudson.

“He mentioned that working alongside Judy in real life was incredibly effortless,” he stated.

‘We simply clicked. Occasionally, someone might have a different approach or express things differently from how I imagined them. However, whenever I listened to Judy, everything seemed clearer in my mind; it felt right and inspiring. It made it easier for me to work with her,’ he explained.

It seems Apple TV Plus is adopting a strategic approach with Stick (no pun intended) by dropping the initial trio of episodes on the launch day, followed by subsequent installments released weekly.

It’s likely that this information will circulate widely over the coming weeks as increasing numbers of individuals discover the golf-themed comedy series and share their enthusiasm with others. This may lead them to consider the possibility of a potential second season.

‘Owen mused about the potential for a second season, hinting that Australia and the UK could be considered as future shooting locales.’

Considering he is also an executive producer on this project, maybe he’ll have enough influence to make it come true.

Stick is currently streaming on Apple TV Plus, where the initial trio of episodes can be viewed immediately, followed by new installments being released on a weekly basis.
