A 17-year-old girl died, and another was left battling for her life, following an incident where their teenage rival gave them ‘poisoned’ cupcakes accompanied by love notes due to ‘envy,’ as reported by the police.
Brazilian officials stated that a 17-year-old female, whose identity was not disclosed, admitted to delivering a poison-infused confection laced with arsenic in an effort to ‘frighten’ Ana Neves; unfortunately, Ana passed away the following day after consuming the contaminated pastry.
When the teenager got back home, they discovered the cake along with a handwritten note saying ‘A treat for the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen,’ in Itapecerica, which is approximately 310 miles north of São Paulo.
Around one hour after consuming the cake at 6 PM on Saturday, she became ill and was subsequently released from the hospital that same evening.
However, her father took her back to the hospital on Sunday afternoon because her condition had deteriorated. She suffered a cardiac arrest and passed away soon after arrival.
The São Paulo Civil Police reported that they have apprehended a 17-year-old individual suspected of admitting to buying the cake from a nearby bakery, poisoning it with arsenic obtained online, and then having it delivered through a delivery service using an application.
The suspect mentioned that the poison was bought online for only 65 Brazilian reais, which is approximately USD 11.50, whereas the courier received payment of 5 reais—about 88 cents.
She reportedly admitted to sending another toxic cake along with a love letter to yet another 17-year-old on May 15. The initial victim nearly succumbed but was promptly taken to the hospital and has fully recovered since then.
The suspect informed the police that she bought the cupcake responsible for killing Neves from Menina Trufa, a bakery.
Josielie Franca, owner of Menina Trufa, mentioned that an unidentified individual came into the store for the transaction; however, neither one of their deliverers was involved in making this particular drop-off.
“The item exited the store, and nobody is aware of its whereabouts,” Franca stated in a video message posted to their shop’s Instagram account on Monday.
‘The person delivering the item was a courier from an app. Typically, all our deliveries come through our own drivers using our signature pink bags marked with our logo. However, this particular delivery wasn’t handled by our team.’
Neves was a junior in high school at João Baptista de Oliveira State School.
“The school stated, ‘Our classroom heaves a great sigh as we bid farewell to a lovely star,’”
No words can fully offer solace, yet we trust that love and cherished recollections will gradually soothe the wounded souls.
‘Aana has been, and will forever remain, an integral part of our story. We will bear with us the pleasant memories, the wisdom gained, and the love she bestowed upon us.’
