A cloud of grief has engulfed Nakwa village in Manyara, Tanzania, after a widow and her two children died following the suspected consumption of poisoned food.

A 36-year-old woman named Shamsia Seplisti, along with her 7-year-old son, Salimu Athimani, and 4-year-old daughter, Hafaa Athimani, were hospitalized at the Babati District Hospital due to complaints of discomfort.

As stated by Mariam Kali, who is a relative, the trio was found to have liver issues, believed to be due to poisoning.

She mentioned that Shamsia first appeared to be recovering and was released from the hospital, however, her health deteriorated the next day, leading to her readmission to the healthcare center.

Heartbroken Mariam observed that Shamsia had been sent to the district hospital, where additional examinations showed she was three months pregnant.

“Unfortunately, she lost the pregnancy, but after having a procedure to clean out her uterus, she received additional medication and was released because she seemed to be recuperating,” she explained.

Mariam also mentioned that their condition deteriorated while they were at home. When they were hurriedly taken back to the hospital, Shamsia’s two children died a day apart from each other. The mother unfortunately passed away soon after.

The mourning woman recalled Shamsia as a compassionate and affectionate individual who did not have any disputes with people nearby.

“As co-widows, we supported one another and strived diligently for our children and a brighter future, yet death claimed her,” stated Mariam.

She requested the Tanzanian government to assist the family in caring for Shamsia’s two surviving children, who are still attending school.

It is reported that the late woman’s husband passed away in 2020, which left her with the responsibility of caring for their four children on her own.

The village headman, Deocrati Marani, stated that the villagers united to assist with the burial of the two children. They were in the process of making preparations for the funeral when they received word about the tragic passing of their mother.

“We initially buried the children, followed by their mother the next day. The cause of their passing remains unknown. We aren’t sure what they might have consumed that could have been tainted with poison; currently, all we have are theories,” he disclosed.

A report from security officials and medical professionals regarding the precise reason for the fatalities or poisoning had not been published as of the reporting date.
