Vietnamese durians are rapidly gaining popularity as a fashionable treat in Beijing, appearing not only in supermarkets and wholesale markets but also finding their place in milk tea shops, bakeries, and upscale eateries.

Available in numerous formats – including fresh, frozen, and pre-packaged options – this fruit is gaining increasing attention among Chinese consumers.

In key markets like Xinfadi and Hema in Beijing, durian sales for May 2025 saw an increase of almost 40% compared to the previous year. The fruit has become more enticing to city shoppers thanks to eye-catching presentations and convenient ready-to-consume choices.

Even though they come with increased costs and a marginally moister consistency this year, durians continue to be popular among Chinese consumers.

Although the Chinese market is presently controlled by imports from Thailand and Malaysia because of their earlier harvesting times, Vietnamese durians are slowly but steadily making progress.

Tang Dongqing, who owns an international durian store at Xinfadi market, mentioned that Vietnamese durians are quite favored by local customers and expressed her wish for their continued presence.

In 2024, Vietnam exported approximately 1.5 million tons of durians, cultivated across almost 180,000 hectares—a figure six times higher compared to 2015. The export value of this fruit surged to a new high of $3.3 billion last year, marking a rise of 43.2% over the previous year, and constituted close to half of all the nation’s fruit and vegetable exports.

China continued to be Vietnam’s top importer of durians, buying more than $2.9 billion worth of the fruit, which accounts for approximately 91% of Vietnam’s total durian export earnings.
