KINSHASA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has partnered with emerging Congolese musician Sista Becky (Rebecca Kalonji) to serve as a High-Level Supporter. In this role, she will advocate for improved nutrition and healthier diets within the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

Given that 28 million individuals in the nation are grappling with extreme hunger and 4.75 million children are enduring acute malnutrition, Sista Becky’s impact and backing will play a crucial role in motivating young people to step up against food scarcity and engage in community enhancement efforts.

“I aim to inspire young individuals through both my speech and actions, encouraging them not just to speak up but also to act on the challenges affecting their future, such as securing healthy nutrition and improving prospects for women and girls,” stated Sista Becky.

Becky Sista is becoming increasingly prominent on the international music stage due to her thought-provoking lyrics. Her musical journey began with the release of “Mr Rap” in 2016, which marked the start of her career. In 2021, her album “Apéritif” solidified her status as a key figure in Congolese music. Recently, she unveiled a new track titled “Kimpa Vita,” further enhancing her reputation as an advocate for social reform in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

As a High-Level Supporter, Sista Becky collaborates with Innoss’B and Distel Zola to advance WFP’s efforts in enhancing school meals programs, promoting nutritious food choices, and combating malnutrition throughout the nation.

We are delighted to welcome Sista Becky as part of our efforts to fight hunger and advance nutrition in DRC,” stated Elvira Pruscini, the acting Representative and Country Director for WFP in DRC. “Her commitment and advocacy for social causes resonate strongly with WFP’s goals, and we anticipate the significant impact we will make collaboratively.

Becky joins WFP during a crucial period as the organization still grapples with significant financial shortages. Over the coming six months, WFP requires $433 million to address escalating humanitarian demands in the DRC.

The United Nations World Food Programme stands as the globe’s biggest charitable organization dedicated to saving lives during crises. It employs food aid not only to alleviate immediate suffering but also to forge a path toward tranquility, stability, and economic advancement for individuals rebuilding their lives after enduring conflicts, natural calamities, and environmental shifts due to climate change.
