Morocco is witnessing a sharp rise in meat prices, with wholesale rates hitting MAD 110/kg in major slaughterhouses, driven by surging demand ahead of Eid Al-Adha and public compliance with the royal appeal to avoid home slaughter.
Industry sources report severe congestion in urban slaughterhouses, with some facilities unable to keep pace.
For example, in Tangier, more than 10,000 sheep were processed within two weeks, which is twice the usual amount, while the daily slaughter of calves hit 250 head, leading to round-the-clock operations to fulfill the increased demand.
Livestock often wait two days for slaughter, and professionals warn of potential disruptions in the coming days. If the trend continues, prices could spike to MAD 150/kg before the holiday.
The unexpected shift toward slaughterhouse reliance has placed intense pressure on the sector, with stakeholders racing to accommodate demand while bracing for continued price hikes.
